Solas have recently taken over The Countryman to provide a new, supported accommodation service for 14 young people. The Countryman used to be a hotel and has a large catering kitchen which Solas will use to run cookery workshops and healthy eating qualifications. The kitchen, which hadn’t been used for almost eight years, needed a spruce up. Last month, six Solas volunteers from Clarence Place and three members of staff got stuck in and the kitchen is now ready for use. Everyone worked really hard but enjoyed themselves, and Solas residents will be testing out their cookery skills in the very near future.
Last month, Solas volunteers and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) spent the day cleaning Ogmore beach, Porthcawl. Solas volunteers from schemes in Monmouthshire, Newport and Shared Houses took part and everyone worked really hard, collecting over 15 bags of rubbish. The litter was recorded and the data will be returned to the MCS. The volunteers explained how the day had helped them to make new friends and how good they felt about helping the environment.
Such is the success of the volunteering projects, that we have now developed a calendar of volunteering events that will take place throughout the year.
