News is just in that Solas Dragons team members Chris Stockwell (Clarence Place), Billy Blanks (Torfaen) & Paul Scarfi (Solas Dragons coach & Hostel Assistant at Clarence Place) who were selected to represent Wales in the Homelessness World Cup 2009 have assisted Wales in winning the prestigious Community Cup trophy in Milan. The Community Cup trophy is awarded to the team who beats the rest of the competition within their selected group.

I hope that you will join us in extending massive congratulations to these 3 guys who have not only represented their country but have also represented Solas too in what has been a competition that has brought together countries from all over the world.

There are only six trophies up for grabs in the whole World Cup tournament, so to bring home one of these much sought after cups is an amazing achievement.

Although the Ukraine went on to lift The World Cup trophy, Wales as a team & Chris, Billy & Paul have demonstrated their amazing talents by doing so well, in fact, they only lost 3 out of the 12 matches that they took part in over the course of the 8 day tournament.

Reports from the website have stated that within a selected group Wales took on & beat the following countries to win the Community Cup:

  • Final – Wales 9 – Sweden 7
  • Semi-Final Wales 9 – Namibia 4
  • Quarter Final Wales 8 – Norway 3

Here is the report on the final of the Community Cup between Wales & Sweden taken from the Homelessness World Cup web site:

“The final of the Community Cup match during this years Homelessness World Cup was a very intense match between two teams of similar physique and preparation.

Solas Residents have been involved in a recent fundraising event that took shape in the form of a charity football match that was held at the Pill Millennium Centre on the 21st of August. Residents & staff from Solas accommodation schemes, Solas Dragons & Seren played against each other in what was a highly competitive soccer afternoon.

The fundraising was in response to two of Solas residents Chris Stockwell & Billy Blanks & also a staff member, Paul Scarfi being selected to represent Wales at the Homelessness World Cup in Milan. Residents & staff then went along to a BBQ hosted by staff & residents at Albert Street.

Alongside this on the 24th of August a sponsored bike ride took place from Brecon to Pontypool. Seven staff members from different services within Solas set out on the ride on what was a wet, windy & miserable Monday morning. There were several aches & pains on the Tuesday morning that’s for sure, just speak to Maria Jones Learning & Development Officer for Solas & she will verify this!

We would to say a big big thank you to everyone who participated in the fundraising, took part in the events & pledged sponsorship monies . In total £1,140 was raised which has really helped with costs involved in helping send the guys to the Homelessness World Cup in Milan.
